The Conversation between Master and Disciple (2)-Empty Barrel makes the most noise
Disciple: A kiosk’s wall next to the ancient famous Tombs engraved with the words designed by certain “Da Shi’ or ‘Master’ so and so, will anyone address him or herself as Master on the tomb’s plate?
Sifu: The ancient tombs dated back in Song and Ching era were mostly engraved with the name of Sifu and his hometown never addresses himself as master:
Disciple: Empty barrel makes the most noise, ha!
A bottle that is filled with water will not sound when you sway it, however, when the bottle in half full, it will make the most noise when you sway it. The words ‘Da Shi’ or Master should be earned and entitled rather than self address, and on normal circumstances self address is self inflicted with low esteem
The teaching of Laozhe places emphasis on humble teaching and middle path, never to the extreme. |
