1975台湾电影「在水一方」译名The Unforgettable Character 是台灣电影史上的经典爱情片，由林青霞?秦漢?恬妞?谷名倫?高凌风?叶明德及卢碧云合演，导演：张美君 。

這首「在水一方」由瓊瑤填詞；林家慶作曲，由江蕾，高凌风原唱主題曲，电影的片头是这样写的。江蕾唱的曲，收錄於江蕾、高凌風的「在水一方 / 昨夜夢中相訴」合輯 (1975年 / 歌林) 。这个片子，高凌风在「在水一方」确实出来唱了一段，是在电视机中 (影片里的人在看电视)。同為歌林唱片公司的歌手﹐鄧麗君也曾經在1980年2月翻唱這首「在水一方」她甜美的嗓音受到更多之矚目與歡迎。鄧麗君的演唱實力確實了得，演绎-的版本更加悠扬婉转，再次把別人的原唱詮釋出另一種韻味。結果造成大家都誤以為這是鄧麗君的成名代表歌之一！

其實江蕾的演繹相當成功，當年「在水一方」也被視為江蕾的最重要的代表作之一，近年歌林唱片有江蕾的復刻CD問世。江蕾的歌喉相當不錯，可惜逐漸在被淡忘中，「在水一方」-也逐漸成為鄧麗君的歌了。

台湾著名作家琼瑶的才华和文学功底在这首歌的歌词中表露无疑。琼瑶很多灵感和意境都来自古典诗词。在她一手包办的自己所有影视歌词最成功的范例，当属改编自诗经《蒹葭》的-「在水一方」。歌词属于古汉语今译，简单上口：「綠草蒼蒼，白霧茫茫，有位佳人，在水一方......。」，在「在水一方」此文字来自《诗经》，属于老祖宗思春之作，琼瑶-作了些个人演绎，却见仿佛依稀,她在水中伫立。《诗经》是中国第一部诗歌总集，在文学发展史上有其突出的地位。

詩經《蒹葭》

蒹葭蒼蒼，白露為霜，所謂伊人，在水一方。溯洄從之，道阻且長，溯游從之，宛在水中央。
蒹葭淒淒，白露未晞，所謂伊人，在水之湄。溯洄從之，道阻且躋，溯游從之，宛在水中坻。

瓊瑤《在水一方》

綠草蒼蒼，白霧茫茫，有位佳人，在水一方。

這兩者皆為韻文，意境內容、修辭技巧也都相似，只有表面句型（四六字長短句與四五字長短句）排序以及用字遣詞稍有不同，簡言之，最大的不同處就是瓊瑤的「在水一方」是詩經-《蒹葭》的白話版（古詩新唱），或者說《蒹葭》就是「在水一方」的典故出處。這首由《詩經》改寫而成之歌主要是敘述對夢中伊人之想望與愛慕。

琼瑶的诗,不仅保留了《诗经》原作的凄清、迷离的意境和反复歌咏、一唱三叹的形式，更重要的是仍然保持着原作那种哀而不伤、深婉真挚的情怀，那扑朔迷离的伊人形象。

琼瑶写过不少情歌，邓丽君，刘文正，凤飞飞好像都唱过。最好听的应属「在水一方」。一代歌后邓丽君的演绎更让它成为经典中的经典。　邓丽君唱：我愿顺流而下，找寻她的方向；却见依稀仿佛，她在水的中央。能够和潺潺细水，萋萋芳草站成一道风景线的女孩，该是怎样的超逸不凡？她必是一身飘飘白衣，不食人间-烟火的苍白美丽。如果说情歌的主题不出等待与追寻、相遇与离去的话，电影「在水一方」的主题歌「在水一方」方把对梦中伊人的向往勾勒得最为醉人。

蒹葭：〔ㄐ｜ㄢ　ㄐ｜ㄚ〕荻草與蘆葦。
蒼蒼：茂盛貌。
伊人：彼人、那個人、意中人。
溯洄：逆流而上。
萋萋：草茂盛貌。
白露：秋天的露水係中國二十四節氣之一，通常是在國曆九月八日或九日，此時大約已是入秋時分，早晚露水較重。
晞：指蒸發、乾燥之意。
湄：指岸邊或水邊。
躋：登上、升上；坡陡也。
坻：水中高地。
采采：美好、繁盛貌。
涘：指水邊或岸邊。
沚：指凸起水面的小塊陸地。
