《Mythology系列之The Loreley's Dance》

I found inspiration for this piece during my two week trip to Germany and Austria recently. Upon the Rhine, there is a bend in the river where a tall rock overlooks the water. It is said that from there, the lovely Loreley sings men to their doom, as the sirens do. She was once a mortal girl. When her lover proved unfaithful, she threw herself from the top of that rocky promontory into the Rhine. Thereafter, sailors who passed by would be lured by her eldritch songs to their deaths among the reefs. There is a famous poem by Heinrich Heine about the Loreley. "...The air is cool and in twilight. The Rhine's dark waters flow; The peak of the mountain in highlight Reflects the evening glow. There sits a lovely maiden Above so wondrous fair, With shining jewels laden, She combs her golden hair...."

《Mythology系列之The Loreley's Longing II》

They say the cliffs are haunted by a solemn, lonely cry,
and I have seen the doves and gulls dance aching lullabies.
Upon the shattered Autumn winds leap echoed, searing sighs,
and when the moon has glazed her eye from depths slips Loreley.

She combs her hair --- Rhine-gold spun light, sings torn flame siren songs.
The winking gleam of dew-drop lace seeps from her crown of thorns.
her face is Youth wed with crook'd Age, and pain for heart-rent wrongs
she's cast upon poor sailors who for Loreley did long.

From depths she spins eternal cries and Loreley does long.

《Mythology系列之Loreley IV》

The Five of Pentacles symbolizes material trouble, loneliness, destitution, spiritual impoverishment. Sometimes refers to love gone astray.

The image I've chosen to depict is the Lorelei (from German legend)...who sits upon her rocky promentory along the Rhine and forever sings entranced listeners to their death in the waters below. Doomed to do so ever since she was spurned by a man she loved. Ghost...siren...maiden....

《Mythology系列之Encounter》

From Germanic legend. Hagen comes upon the Lady Catherine and her maids as they hide in the rushes when he and his warriors come to the waterside to bathe.

《Mythology系列之Box of Hope》

Sorrow to the ones who fail
to heed the words divinely trailed
across the hearts and mindless souls
of human choice for human woes.

They gifted her with sundry charms:
beauty, spark; her gaze disarmed
the haughty sun, the lowly mite
and all who took her in their sight.

And to the heart that blossomed in
this molded creature meant for sin
They placed with gentle animosity
A blazing Soul of curiosity.

And so it be, and so tales go
that when she loosed from box of gold
the Ravagers of mankind's plight
a single ray of lingering light...

hope....

《Mythology系列之The Passion of Thorns》

"I swear to you I will be true," he whispered to the maid.
The sun and sky, I'll give to you, and never shall I fade."
She laughed at him. She turned away. "You think I seek fool things?
What use have I for moon and waves? Pray, give your words true ring!
-- Make this white rose deepest red, like blood on which you've sworn;
for then I'll know ye true, all said, by passion bled of thorns."

《Celtic系列之Bona na Croin》

"The tree of Guernica (ger nika) was a symbol of traditional Basque freedoms. The elders would gather under this particular oak tree in Guernica (a small city in the Basque country---in Spain, where most of my blood is from) and swear to respect freedom under its boughs. The original tree lived from 1860 and died just last year in June (2004).

The fox (a take on the traditional irish wolf design) is yet another symbol of freedom and defiance, stepping on a broken crown in disregard for sovereignty, and wearing a broken collar--she is not a slave to the tangible universe, or society and its norms. I chose a fox because I didn't feel a wolf had my personality written in it. Wolves are silent, subtle, wiser---foxes are craftier tricksters that sometimes don masks and smile but hold the knife. (sword, mask)

The cross is not a symbol of catholicism for this one, since I never had anything divine to believe in. It used to symbolize the four directions, and that's what it was meant to mean here. The defiance from the fox or whoever is beneath the tree of guernica flows in all directions.

Bona na Coin is what's usually written under the Irish Wolf design - 'Neither collar nor crown.'"
