教堂，是指一切基督徙的禮拜場所，無論是天主教(基督舊教)、基督教(基督新教)，或東正教(希臘、俄國等)，以別於佛教、道教、回教等的寺、廟、宮、觀等。

教堂音樂(Church Music)只包括用於教會正式禮儀或團體敬禮的音樂，因此凡是教堂以外的宗教活勁，像西元十一世紀的聖禮劇(Liturgical Drama)，十七世紀的宗教歌劇、神劇，以及民間演出的受難劇等，縱然文詞性質和音樂表達完全出於宗教啟發，甚至取自新舊約聖經的，也只能稱之為廣義的宗教音樂，不是真正的教堂音樂。

最早的教會詩歌，是基督在晚餐廳領導門徒唱出的舊約歡讚詩篇，因此詩篇和散見於新舊約的出名詩歌，是所有基督徒歌詞取材的重要資源。而敬禮儀式中最早也最重要的核心，即彌撒或聖餐禮儀，也正是來自基督最後晚餐祝聖酒餅，分饗門徒的訓令：「你們要為紀念我，同樣去作。」

羅馬初期教會擧行彌撒是用古希臘語，第三世紀以後漸被拉丁文所取代，因此直到本世紀一九六○年代，梵蒂岡第二屆大公會議容許各國用本地語文擧行聖禮為止，各時代不同風格的彌撒曲，都是用拉丁文譜寫的。

音樂方面古代是用葛麗果聖歌的單音曲調，九至十六世紀產生了大量複音對位式無伴奏合唱彌撒，十七世紀自巴洛克、古典、浪漫等時期至今，便成為交響樂與大合唱為主的風格了。因此巴哈、海頓、莫札特、貝多芬、舒伯特、古諾等名家的彌撒曲，包括追悼亡者用的安魂彌撒曲在內，都是合唱與管弦樂配合進行的。

彌撒曲以外，最重要的教堂音樂是日課聖樂，就是全年各時期的晨禱、晚禱、日間祈禱等，其中包括了無數常可聽到的曲目，如詩篇、感恩曲、讚美詩、聖母哀悼曲、聖母讚主曲等。其他如經文歌、聖體頌、聖母頌等，也是大家熟悉的教堂敬禮音樂。

東正教的彌撒冗長儀式，至今仍用希臘語或俄語等歌唱；拜占庭風格的隆重吟誦，十七世紀以後更加上同節奏合唱的呼應，然而始終依教父所提倡聲樂抑制器樂的原則，不用任何管弦樂器的伴奏，甚至連最足代表教堂音樂的管風琴也排斥不用。這與視管風琴為聖樂典範樂器的天主教和基督教就大不相同了。

基督新教創始於十六世紀馬丁路德的宗教改革，自始就是以本國語文的大眾聖詩為號召的，風格也是由單音而復音，至十七、八世紀管風琴音樂大興，不但伴奏聖歌，而且擔任獨奏，因而產生前奏聖詠、幻想賦格等，成為基督教對管風琴聖樂的極大貢獻，至巴哈達於頂點；與同時期天主教的管風琴彌撒曲，即琴聲與歌唱交替出現的風格，同樣促成了管風琴獨奏的重要發展歷程。

路德教會的另一特色，是把原本世俗的清唱劇(Cantata)徹底宗教化，成為主日崇拜的重要項目，至巴哈時代已漸進入宗教抒情音樂的精緻藝術境界；晚期，他更利用歌劇的吟誦及詠歎，而不陷入戲劇化的外場誇張，且能與他的受難劇同樣虔誠、內在、富於宗教性的深摯，殊為難得。巴哈譜寫清唱劇前後約三百首，今存的也達二百零二首之多，可惜巴哈死後，路德教會對清唱劇已不感興趣，而被大眾化的簡單聖詩合唱所湮沒了。

英國教會保持了更多的天主教成分，其最富特色的聖樂是英國頌歌(Anthem)，有純合唱的及附加獨唱的兩種；名稱來自對唱曲，形式卻更近似當時流行於德、法的大經文歌，或清唱劇，如韓德爾的二十五首巨型頌歌，雖然多為皇家的教堂慶典及婚葬而作，卻都是大合唱與管弦樂的佳品。</b></font></p></TD></TR></TABLE></TD></TR></TABLE></CENTER>
